Well, after another impropbable run, Vandy baseball is once again a game away from a championship. This time, it's the regional championship, and the right to advance to a Super-Regional.
A week ago they made a hell of a run through the SEC tourney, only to choke in the championship game against LSU. Actually, I attribute that more to LSU, who after they lost early to Vandy played with a vengeance.
It would be really cool to see this group of talented but young ball players extend their season.
This is the first ranking of any kind in like forever of SEC schools in pre-season that had Vandy anywhere but last or second to last. Vandy is the 9th best team coming out of spring practice according to this dude.
Things Vanderbilt has going for them: QB depth - we have two legit SEC QBs, a third who has shown flashes (Funk), and a true freshman Parade All-American (Goro); almost every starter returning, on both offense and defense; an o-line who played all last year together - going into last season, none of those guys had ever started together, and they really jelled throughout the season; a top secondary; and continuity in the coaching staff.
Things working against us: WR depth - we have plenty of talent here, but very little experience - need someone to step up huge here; light in the ass on the defensive line, as usual; alot of unknowns at RB; a murderous schedule, which, in addition to the regular SEC minefield, includes Georgia Tech; and continuity in the coaching staff.
My prediction is we are right around .500 once again. I will go with 6-6, and another bowl game for Vandy. Having LSU and Georgia Tech on the schedule prevents a step forward.
After a rough start to the season, Vandy baseball has really been surging lately. This past weekend we took 2 out of 3 at Arkansas, who I believe is (or was) the consensus number 1 team in the country. Vandy has a great coach and alot of talent, so it is nice to see them starting to play up to their potential.
ESPN has Vandy ranked DEAD LAST in its college football program "prestige" rankings. We're below freaking Idaho. I mean, seriously, this is some bullshit. I know our football program has been a laughing stock for years, but #119 out of 119? Screw you ESPN.
We won our first bowl game in over 50 years! Oh god, what a day.
What started out as a terrible day after an ass-chewing by my boss, ended gloriously, albeit very cold.
Ash and I had great tickets for the Music City Bowl, around the 30 yard line, about 7 rows up.
And who should happen to be standing right in front of us the first half of the game? None other than Mr. Jay Cutler himself.
My wife is in love with Cutler, and who can blame her? My god that is a fine specimen of former Vandy QB! He was just glorious in his total Vandy awesomeness. Anyway, I digress . . .
The game was typical for a Vandy win. We always seemed on the verge of losing that game. But we won the way we started off the year - winning the penalty and turnover battle. In fact, Vandy had 0 penalties and 0 turnovers. Incredible!
Things I will never forget: the redneck Vandy fan behind us screaming the entire game, making us laugh our asses off; the annoying BC pep band which, inexplicably, had mics and amplifiers, while Vandy had its full nd and you couldn't even hear them; 2 or 3 of the players dropping to their knees once the interception was made to seal the victory; the absolute joy on that o-lineman's face (couldn't see his number) as he hoisted the Music City Bowl trophy; Upson, the punter - the FREAKING PUNTER - winning the MVP award.
Man, just an incredible day, and what better place for that bowlless streak to come to an end than right there in Nashville!
Them 'Dawgs put a WHUPPIN' on my Commodores. The game honestly was not as close as the score looked. Like every other Vandy fan, I am puzzled why it took over three quarters to realize Mackenzi Adams should have been in at QB. But the bottom line is our o-line got whipped at the point of attack. And our players acted like it was the first game of the season. Totally out of synch, uncharacteristic mental errors, etc. If not for one of the worst punting performances by MSU that I have ever seen, this game could have been a blowout.
Well, we have tickets to the Georgia game, and I am counting on a better result there. MSU was a classic trap game. We always seem to play Georgia well, and I think we catch them napping again while Georgia looks forward to a BRUTAL schedule.
(1) I did not realize Chesney picked us to win the game. He is still a fan of the EuTee Vawls, and he still was pissing me off with his comments, but I will give him a pass.
(2) I didn't realize Chesney is recovering from chemo. Now I feel like a jerk.
